Oil Based Skincare – Myths & Facts

If oil based skincare sounds crazy to you, you might have grown up in the few generations that was taught “oil + skin = breakouts.” But is that really true?

Turns out, not so much! If oil based skincare sounds crazy to you, you might have grown up in the few generations that was taught

The myth that oil causes breakouts actually first came about as a marketing ploy – one that doesn’t have a lot of scientific backing. This myth makes sense in theory – acne and oily skin often go hand in hand, especially during the teenage years. So skincare companies started putting “oil-free” on their packaging as sort of an anti-acne assurance.

But there is no evidence that oil-based skincare causes acne. In fact, the opposite is true. According to Acne.org, the reason for this is simple:

Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principals of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM [oil cleansing method] can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

The truth is, oil based skin care is the historical norm. In fact, there’s record of cultures as old as the ancient Greeks and Egyptians using olive oil in their skin care routines.

Not all oils are created equally, however. For instance, you absolutely want to avoid mineral oil, a petrochemical found in many skincare products on the market. Mineral oil does clog pores – not to mention, it’s not environmentally sustainable at all! Better choices include plant-based oils, especially those with antibacterial properties.
